“If you habitually meditate upon God,
your whole soul will be filled with him,
you will learn his expression,
and learn to frame your actions after his example.”
St. Francis de Sales
Hello and thank you for checking out The Distant Spire, a devotional project providing gentle, reflective music for reflection and meditation. The purpose is simple; provide a brief detour away from this busy, noisy world into a place of rest and reflection. Don’t we all need that from time to time?
Reading about the Christian saints of old, and the meditative prayer life that many of them led inspires me to not only grow in devotion and draw nearer to our loving Heavenly Father, but also help others to do the same. Composing music that provides a way to reflect and meditate in a place of stillness is my way of hopefully achieving that aim.
What to expect
I regularly post devotional music to encourage quiet contemplation, as well as some context for the music such as a devotion, poem or inspirational writing from the Church saints.
In addition to listening through this newsletter and on the Substack platform, The Distant Spire is also on Apple Podcasts, most other podcasts providers and Bandcamp. You can find my music on the links below:
What’s the name all about?
The concept of The Distant Spire came as I pondered the positive, hopeful image that the church spire evokes. Historically in medieval Europe, the local parish church was situated in the centre of a town or village, and was usually the tallest building. The spire could be seen from a distance and was a comforting symbol of hope and stability for the villager, traveller or war-weary knight returning home.
The spire doesn’t speak in the same way as it used to; the march of progress has changed all that. For most in our Western society, spiritual life has largely been replaced by a secular existence: the concrete, physical, sensual; and often drowned out by the noise of busy-ness, traffic and technology. But the longing for peace and stability remains. So let this space, for a short moment in time at least, be the vantage point from which to see that distant spire.
How do I sign up?
The Distant Spire is a reader and listener supported project. Subscribers and followers have my immense gratitude for their time and attention. I highly recommend installing the Substack App onto your device for easier access to posts, chat and notes.
